Don’t you just love summertime! I’m sitting on my patio enjoying the fresh air and sunshine as I write this blog (see pic). Did you know that being outside is an incredible boost to your wellbeing? Here are 3 reasons why:
Fresh air improves your mood and gives you more energy. Taking a brisk walk in nature brings more fresh air and oxygen into your lungs resulting in increased energy and clarity of mind. A 2010 study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology showed that participants felt healthier, happier and more alive when they spent time in nature.
You are less likely to get sick and reduce your chances of developing MS, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes and heart disease. Vitamin D plays a key role in preventing these diseases and in your overall health. 30 minutes of direct sunlight enables your body to produce enough Vitamin D for the day.
Time spent around trees and plants reduces your stress levels along with other health benefits. Trees produce airborne chemicals called phytoncides. These phytoncides have been shown to reduced cortisol levels and lower blood pressure along with boosting your immune system. There’s even suggestion that these chemicals may help prevent cancer.
So go and enjoy the summer sunshine! Try to spend at least 30 minutes outside every day and more if your schedule allows for it. You’ll feel both healthier and happier.
